For the first time in history, Ecuador’s national men’s soccer team, affectionately called the “Tri” (short for Tricolor), has made it onto the top ten of FIFA’s world rankings.
Ecuador’s team has earned 1,056 points in World Cup qualifying matches and FIFA-sponsored friendlies to move up on the chart and bump Russia down to the 11th spot on the rankings.
FIFA releases a new list every month. Spain (1538 points) has held on to the top spot, and Germany (1428 points) and Argentina (1292 points) still follow in second and third respectively. Croatia (1191) jumped five rungs to score fourth place on the rankings, for the first time since their third place finish at the 1998 World Cup in France.
England, Italy and the Netherlands all lost ground on the chart.
