Guayaquils Metrovía, the rapid bus system in operation since 2006, is about to implement a new main route line. The "Troncal 2" is the third main line to be put in operation. It will transport passengers between the Rio Daule terminal near the Terminal Terrestre in the North, travel west of the airport, and through downtown to the 25 de Julio Terminal in the south.

The southern portion has been active for a few weeks. The northern portion of the line was supposed to begin operations yesterday, but service at the new stops was inconsistent and still in test mode.

The lines official opening been postponed by various factors. There is an unresolved conflict between the Metrovía company and the CTE traffic authority about the routes that competing public buses should take.

Hundreds of non-Metrovía buses (run by private transportaion co-operative, but regulated by the national transit authority CTE) currently use the Avenida de las Americas, where the main Troncal 2 Metrovía line (run by a private company and regulated by the municipality) and its feeder buses demand exclusivity. The CTE  says finding alternate routes for all of them is impractical, but Guayaquils Mayor and the Metrovía company demand it.

Also, 24 Metrovía buses havent been claimed at customs, so the company does not have the units to meet the demand of opening the new line.

When Troncal 2 begins operation, the green line on the map below will represent its complete route. The coloured lines (purple, grey, orange, maroon, forest green) on the northern section of the Troncal 2 are the new feeder buses that will operate in Guayaquils northern neighbourhoods: Alborada, Garzota, Urdenor and Kennedy.
